Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a method that evaluates the environmental impacts of a system or a product across its life cycle stages. Through accounting for impacts related to material resources, building components, installation and construction methods and end-of-life alongside those that occur during the use phase, LCA plays a crucial role in evaluating pathways towards improved environmental outcomes.

The Sustainable Systems Research Group focuses on several branches and applications of LCA research, including uncertainty analysis in LCA, policy analysis, and decision strategies for infrastructure systems (e.g., energy systems, road networks, water distribution networks, among others). Our research efforts include:

  • Evaluating the influence of technological changes on system-level material flows and GHG emissions over time
  • Determining modelling factors that may affect GHG emissions predictions at the system-level
  • Carrying out LCA analyses with different scopes such as embodied emissions, future operational energy use, and decommissioning
