What is CANOE?
The Canadian Open Energy Model (CANOE) is an open-source energy systems model designed to simulate Canada’s future energy landscape. Based on the TEMOA framework, CANOE evaluates how different scenarios and policies might impact Canada’s energy system. By exploring pathways to reduce emissions, CANOE aims to guide and inform better climate policy towards achieving net-zero emissions in Canada by 2050.
What is TEMOA?
TEMOA is a bottom-up, multi-sector, capacity planning energy systems optimization model written in Python. It models the flow and transformation of energy in all its forms from root sources (resource extraction, domestic production, and import) through to satisfaction of end-use demands. TEMOA is a linear programming, multi-sectoral, capacity expansion model that implements Modelling to Generate Alternatives (MGA), Method of Morris and other techniques to allow exploration of model uncertain
How do we build the model?
The TEMOA framework is designed to be flexible to different energy systems. The model isn’t programmed with rigorous behaviors matching the energy system; it’s not a simulator. Rather, we define the end-use demands that need to be met, list the technologies available to meet those demands, and provide data on their efficiency and cost. From there, the model will figure out the rest. But for this, we need data.
